Lincoln City Council Member Bennie Shobe to Seek Third Term

By Chase Porter Sep 11, 2024 | 12:44 PM

Lincoln City Council member Bennie Shobe announced today his intention to seek a third term as an at-large member of the council.

Shobe first assumed office in 2017. He was reelected in 2021 and his current term will end in May of 2025.

Born in Kentucky, Shobe has lived in Lincoln for more than 20 years. Prior to serving on the council, he was a program analyst for the Nebraska Department of Labor and an adjunct professor of criminal justice at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He also served as president of the Lincoln Branch NAACP and on the Lincoln Police Hiring and Promotion Committee, and the Malone Community Center Board of Directors.

Although city council elections in Lincoln are officially nonpartisan, Shobe has been identified as a Democrat by the Lancaster County Election Commissioner.

Shobe said in a statement, he believes work remains to be done to make sure all Lincoln residents benefit from the city’s high quality of life.

“For those in our community who too often are not included in conversations about how best to grow our city. I will continue to meet with and listen to a wide spectrum of Lincoln residents and make sure that their concerns are part of the decision-making process,” Shobe said.

Shobe has been endorsed by the Lincoln Police Union, the Lincoln Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 644, the Lincoln Journal Star, the Lincoln Central Labor Union/AFL-CIO, Nebraska Conservation Voters, and North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters.

During his years on the council, Shobe says he has worked to secure funding for public safety, streets and roads repair, the development of affordable housing and in support of the city’s climate action plan.
