A new chapter began on Monday for the Clyde Malone Community Center at 23rd and ‘U’ Street. “This new building will ensure Malone continues to be a place where kids and families can see a bright future for themselves on their journey to breaking that cycle of multigenerational poverty,” says CEO and executive director John Goodwin.
Malone is Lincoln’s oldest community center and has served the community for nearly 70 years. “Every year Malone serves more than 1,000 kids and families in Lincoln through its programs focused on offering opportunities different from everyday experiences so they can see new possibilities for their future and gain confidence in themselves,” Goodwin says.
The new three-story, 55,000 square foot facility will feature classrooms and workspaces for their programs. It will also house community gathering spaces and a large gymnasium. Goodwin says construction will take nearly two years to complete.
Goodwin says a Breaking the Cycle fundraising campaign has already raised $14.1 million needed for the new building. They need to raise another $9 million and are asking Lincoln residents to contribute to the campaign.
More than 75 donors have come together to support this important project with a lead gift of $2 million from the Abel Foundation setting the pace. “This milestone commitment from the Abel Foundation will impact kids and families at Malone far into the future,” says Max Rodenburg, Vice President of the Abel Foundation and Co-Chair of the Breaking the Cycle campaign.
“The Abel Foundation is proud to give a lead gift to the campaign to support the Malone Center, a beacon of hope and strength in our neighborhood for nearly 70 years,” said Max Rodenburg,
