Lincoln Police were busy late Monday night into early Tuesday morning after two men were assaulted and two businesses were robbed. Lieutenant Jason Goodwin tells KLIN News the two men, ages 42 and 49, were assaulted near 49th and Madison Avenue shortly before 10:00 Monday night. Both men told officers they were struck in the head with a hammer several times.
They identified 42-year-old Demario Handy of Lincoln as the suspect. Goodwin says Handy was later found and taken into custody. He was booked for second degree assault and use of a weapon to commit a felony. One of the victims was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

At around 11:40 p.m. Officers were called to investigate a robbery at the Casey’s near 25th & O Street. Goodwin says a man walked in, took a bottle of alcohol and left. When confronted outside, 47-year-old Francis Mesteth reportedly displayed a replica handgun and ran from the area. Officers were able to locate him after a short chase and he was taken into custody.

The second robbery happened just before 1:00 Tuesday morning at the U-Stop near 82nd and ‘O’. “The man walked into the store, went behind the counter and pretty badly assaulted the clerk,” Goodwin says. He then stole several items and left.
Officers searched the area and found 23-year-old Zakariae Elouartiti in possession of the stolen items. He was arrested for Robbery. The clerk suffered non-life threatening injuries.
