The Lincoln Police Department is focusing on public safety and security as the first home football game approaches. LPD Public Information Officer Erika Thomas says directing traffic before and after the game will be the biggest issue.
“We have 20-40 officers working off-duty directing traffic at numerous intersections in and around downtown to get fans in vehicles and on foot where they need to go safely and efficiently,” Thomas says. “We’re anticipating a lane or two of traffic on 9th and 10th will be closed due to missing sidewalks so pedestrians can get to and from the stadium without significant delays.”
During the game LPD officers assist UNL Police with their security efforts inside the stadium. Additional officers will also work special details downtown and the Railyard, focusing on various alcohol offenses, tavern violations and other violations.
“We recommend fans check their favorite navigation app, like Apple, Google or Waze, and our partners’ websites regularly for information about routes, traffic and parking,” Thomas says. “Please give yourself plenty of time to find parking, get to the stadium, through security and to your seats.”
LPD will also work closely with Lincoln Transportation and Utilities with traffic flow. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department will be working with the Nebraska State Patrol and NDOT to maintain traffic flow and safety on the interstate and highways around Lincoln.
