Lincoln Fire and Rescue crews put out flames this afternoon at a cardboard recycling company near 6th and “J” Street.

LFR got the call around 2:38 p.m. Thursday and arrived to find a pile of dropped off cardboard which had apparently been on fire upon arrival.

“The employees had a quick response with some fire extinguishers and quickly called LFR. We got here and the fire was spreading, due to the wind conditions and the cardboard materials being flammable, highly flammable. We upgraded to get more crews here,” LFR Public Information Officer MJ Lierman told KLIN News on the scene.

Crews were eventually able to foam the cardboard to prevent further spread. Lierman said it would be a “longer operation” to get things under control and cleaned up, but everything is under control right now.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. All employees were able to be out safely and no firefighters were injured. It is currently unknown the extent of the damages.
