Calling all local artists — Lincoln City Libraries (LCL) is accepting design proposals for a forthcoming mural to be installed on the west-facing exterior wall of the South Branch Library (2675 South Street).
The idea originated during conversations between the LUX Center for the Arts, who have been involved in numerous murals around the city, and the Country Club Neighborhood Association, “…and we are just the lucky recipients of this generous community art project,” said Amy Huffman, public information specialist with LCL.
Submissions will be reviewed by members of both organizations and City of Lincoln officials. The winner is expected to be announced in early September, with the installation of the mural scheduled for early October.
The chosen artist will receive $3,000, funded by a grant from the Country Club Neighborhood Association. Materials will be provided within an agreed-upon budget and the LUX Center for the Arts will offer administrative assistance to support the artist throughout the project. The mural will cover up to 50% of the brick wall that faces the parking lot on the west side of the building. The selected design will be painted on industrial paper which will be applied to the building’s surface as a temporary installation.
Ryan Wieber, Lincoln City Libraries Director, encouraged applicants to create a design that reflects the character of the location.
“This mural offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the cultural and artistic landscape of South Branch Library and its surrounding neighborhoods,” Wieber said.
Artists may submit proposals at luxcenter.org/mural-application until 11:59 p.m. August 28.
