The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has wrapped up their participation in a national ‘Speeding Prevention’ mobilization, geared towards the reduction of speed related fatalities.

From July 12 through July 29, an increased number of deputies in marked cruisers focused their efforts on speed related traffic violations. Over those 17 days, patrols pulled over 347 vehicles, issued 247 official traffic citations, issued 230 warning/defect cards, arrested 3 people on outstanding warrants and made 4 criminal arrests.

Official citations include:

  • 167 speeding
  • 1 felony flee to avoid arrest
  • 1 use handheld communication device while driving
  • 1 driving while intoxicated
  • 10 driving during suspension
  • 2 open alcohol container violation
  • 6 seatbelt violations
  • 37 registration and insurance violations
  • 3 stop sign violations
  • 2 fictitious license plate violation
  • 17 various traffic law violations

Criminal violations included citations being issued for possession of marijuana less than 1 ounce, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstructing a police officer and criminal impersonation. Overtime compensation for the additional deputies working during the crackdown was funded by the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
