Nebraska Traffic Law Update: Turns on Red Arrows Now Prohibited

Due to an update in state statute, Nebraska drivers will be prohibited from making right-and-left turns on red arrow signals effective Friday, July 19.

LTU Traffic Engineering Manager Dan Carpenter says this change will enhance road safety for both drivers and people crossing the street.

“We’re fairly judicious in the use of red turn arrows, but where we put them in we really want to discourage vehicles from making a turn on red,” Carpenter told KLIN News.

Previously, turns were permitted on red turn arrows after coming to a complete stop — similar to a solid red light. But going forward, the law mandates that drivers remain fully stopped until a green arrow signal is displayed.

This update is part of the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s ongoing efforts to improve street safety and reduce crashes at intersections.
