Dangerous heat and humidity is forecast for Saturday afternoon and evening with heat indices as high as 109 degrees. A heat advisory is posted for the entirety of the area. Dangerous heat continues Sunday and Monday with heat index readings of 100 to 112 degrees or more likely.  An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for both days.

Storms Monday are possible during the afternoon and will be capable of producing a brief downburst or small hail.

…EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON SUNDAY TO 8 PM CDT

* WHAT…For the Heat Advisory, heat index values up to 109 are expected. For the Excessive Heat Warning, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 112 can be expected.

* WHERE…Portions of southwest Iowa and east central and southeast Nebraska.

* WHEN…For the Heat Advisory, from 1 PM this afternoon to 8 PM CDT this evening. For the Excessive Heat Warning, from noon Sunday to 8 PM CDT Monday.

* IMPACTS…Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
