LPD Investigating ‘Demolition Derby’ Involving Stolen Vehicles

By Tom Stanton Jul 12, 2024 | 12:47 PM

Lincoln Police are investigating a string of Hyundai and Kia thefts in the Capitol Beach area.  The reports were made Wednesday night into Thursday morning.  Captain Todd Kocian says a 56-year-old man reported someone had stolen his 2016 Hyundai Sonata from the area of 28th and ‘T’ Street around 6:00 a.m.

About the same time Kocian says they got a call from someone at Fleming Fields near 33rd and Huntington Avenue saying two cars were driving through the park and intentionally hitting each other.

“The witness reported the cars were driving through the grass and parking lot before fleeing southbound on 30th Street,” Kocian says.   The car that was reported stolen near 28th and ‘T’ was later found with damage to the rear window, steering column, front, rear and both sides.

The other vehicle used in the demolition derby has not been found. Kocian says several other stolen cars had their windows shattered and steering columns damaged.  There was thousands of dollars worth of damage done to the vehicles.

This was the second time several Hyundai’s and Kia’s have been stolen this summer from the Capitol Beach area.
