South Haymarket Skate Park Fundraiser Set for Saturday

Anticipation is ramping up for Lincoln’s forthcoming South Haymarket Skatepark, and a local skatepark association is hoping to close the project’s funding gap with a community fundraiser this weekend.

The Lincoln Skatepark Association (LSA) will host the “LSA Big Deal” street party this Saturday, July 13, from 3 to 8 p.m. outside of The Hub Cafe on North 21st Street between “P” and “Q” streets. The free event will feature food trucks, a skateboard contest, and live music from local bands Mothhawk, Disrepair, and The Credentials.

The South Haymarket Park is expected to cost $25 million, with funds provided by a combination of public and private sources. The event’s fundraising campaign is led by Lincoln Parks Foundation, and will be powered by t-shirt sales, a prize raffle, and a custom skateboard silent auction.

“Lincoln is finally getting something that is on the level with other cities around the country of this size,” LSA President Phil Burcher tells KLIN News. “It’s been a long road to make this happen, and I think the skaters are excited to get something in Lincoln that they’re traveling to other cities to get now.”

The state-of-the-art, in-ground skatepark is set to break ground in 2025 on the northern end of South Haymarket Park, 7th and “N” streets, and will be Nebraska’s largest skateboard facility at 8.5-acres. The park is being designed by Los Angeles based skatepark developers Spohn Ranch Skateparks.

“It’s going to be built by one of the better skate parks companies in the country, and we’ve been working with Spohn Ranch to make sure this plan is exciting,” Burcher added.

Back in January, skaters gave feedback on preliminary park designs to developers during an open house. Factoring in the opinions of Lincoln’s thrashers, initial concept design for the park were revealed in May.
