Seven People Recovering After Mass Shooting In Crete

By Mark Vail Jun 29, 2024 | 3:13 PM

Investigators say four adults and three children who were shot outside a house in Crete Friday afternoon are expected to make a full recovery.   It was around 4:45 pm when the Saline County 911 center received multiple calls about an active shooter in the 1200 Block of Crestline Drive in Crete.

Arriving officers immediately worked to evacuate victims.  During those efforts they also heard a single gunshot inside a house across the street.  NSP Superintendent Colonel John Bolduc confirmed NSP Swat team members breached a house at 1810 Parkland Street about 6:40 pm and discovered the suspect, 74-year old Billy Booth, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As of Saturday afternoon, one person remainerd hospitalized at Bryan West in Lincoln and two victims are being treated at Children’s Hospital in Omaha.  None of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries.

Crete Police Chief Gary Young

Crete Police Chief Gary Young confirmed his department had multiple events with Booth and the victims dating back to 2021.  Complaints included driving behavior, improper parking, nuisance properties and other quality of life issues.  Young said, “There was a single report from the victims that the suspect had flipped them off, told them to go home or back to  where they came from,  to speak English.”   Young said the family declined to send the incident on for prosecution.
