Organizers for Paid Sick Leave For Nebraskans are celebrating after turning in 138,000 signatures to the Secretary of State on Thursday. Campaign Manager Jodi Lepaopao says they are confident they will end up with the 90,000-thousand valid signatures to put the issue before voters in November.
“If approved by voters, this would provide full time, part-time and temporary workers the right to earn paid sick time to use for themselves or take time off and care for a family member.” The ballot initiative would require businesses with 20 or fewer employees to provide a minimum of five paid sick days a year for full-time employees. Bigger businesses would be required to fund seven days.
Lepaopao says full- and part-time employees would earn an hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. If approved, those changes would take effect in October 2025.
