As the temperatures rise during the summer so does the chance for traveling sales scams. LPD Public Information Officer Erika Thomas says possible scammers will come to the door and say they will assess your roof, windows or grass for free and then suggest extensive work they say is required.
Senior citizens are often targeted for this type of scam. “Please remember to do your research and have multiple people give an estimate unless you are completely familiar with the person who has approached you,” Thomas says.
“Traveling salespeople must have permits from the City of Lincoln. This is not required for groups like Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and school teams.” Thomas says if the salesperson says they “do not have it” or “my boss has it,” be aware that it must be present with the salesperson available for viewing if requested.
She says sales permits apply to magazine sales and similar companies. “Oftentimes, a simple no thank you when they make their pitch will dissuade them,” Thomas says.
