Summer is upon us, and our AC units will be working overtime in the coming months.

KLIN News spoke with Lead Technician for John Henry’s Plumbing Heating & Air, Wes Dalrymple — who offered advice for homeowners regarding up-keep on their AC units, recognizing any issues, and how to keep bills as low as possible.

The most often, AC’s experience problems due to outdated filters and lack of maintenance. “There’s a lot of things that need to be done on a routine basis, like washing out the condenser coils and checking components on the outdoor units, making sure condensate drains are cleared, and just making sure you’re ready for the summer months,” said Dalrymple.

If you notice your home’s AC running constantly, the house is humid or not cooling properly, water pooling underneath the furnaces if: these could be signs that your unit is on the fritz.

Dalrymple recommends a yearly check up on your system to make sure it’s ready for the summer, “It’s just gonna allow customers not to have issues on the hottest days of the year or the coldest days of the year.”

Air filters could use a replacement every three months, and with Lincoln having a moderate concentration of cotton trees, outside condensers often get plugged up with cotton as trees come in bloom.

Lastly, to make the most of your AC usage, Dalrymple said keep blinds closed to block out sun beams, place dehumidifiers downstairs or on your HVAC systems to help get the humidity out of the house, turn off your humidifiers, make sure your windows are closed all the way.

— and if anything is wrong with you system, its always a good idea to have a professional come by to inspect it.
