Lincoln Residents Can Save Lives Through Hands-On CPR

By Tom Stanton Jun 5, 2024 | 11:36 AM

When someone suffers a cardiac arrest time is critical.  As part of CPR and AED Awareness Week, Lincoln Fire and Rescue Public Information Officer MJ Lierman is stressing the importance of knowing Hands-On CPR.

She says it’s a quick and easy process.  “You put one hand in the middle of the chest and cross your hand over the top and press hard and fast.  “If you call 911, our Lancaster County Emergency Center will count for you.”

This is CPR and AED Awareness Week and Lierman residents of all ages can do it it and statistics show people’s lives are saved when chest compressions are administered.  “The chest compressions are good for the first few minutes when someone is in cardiac arrest because it pushes the remaining oxygen through the body and keeps vital organs and the brain functioning and it buys that person time until we can get there.”

When you call 911 the dispatcher will count for you while you do chest compressions. Lierman says many people don’t feel comfortable doing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, which makes Hands-On CPR so important.

Lierman says for every minute that passes the chances of surviving drop by 10%.   If you want to join the Lifesaving Community, Lierman says they have Hands-On CPR classes available.  Click here for more details.
