The list of vehicles prohibited on walk/bike trails in Lincoln was updated by the City Council on Monday.

The council unanimously approved the ordinance to amend the city’s municipal code to prohibit the use of any moped, golf cart, motor vehicle, motorcycles, tractors, off-road vehicles, go carts, riding lawnmowers, garden tractors, all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles, and any gas-powered bicycle upon any multi-use paths or hiker-biker trails in the city, except those operated by City employees and authorized parties.

Council Chair Sändra Washington said there will be further conversations with the Parks and Recreation Department regarding the use of hybrid electric bicycles known as “e-bikes.”

“This main motion does not regulate e-bikes on multi-use trails here in Lincoln,” said Washington. “We will have a conversation about the use of e-bikes, recognizing that there’s many items that we need to discuss on this one, and there’s many perceptions. The Parks Department will lead that conversation and do the research necessary so that we can have a full understanding of where that will go.”

Current city ordinance prohibits vehicles traveling faster than 25 mph on trails, thus, e-bikes are allowed as long as they don’t exceed that speed limit.
