Progress is being made on Lincoln’s first-of-its-kind inclusive playground. Assistant Parks and Recreation Director JJ Yost tells KLIN News they are in the final design stages for the playground at Mahoney Park in northeast Lincoln.
He says the playground will be about four times bigger that the existing one and provides physical accommodations and specialized equipment for children with different levels of ability. “It will have ground based play pieces that make music, interact with water, things for climbing and things for sliding.”
Yost says it will be completely ADA accessible. “There will be ramps, very gradual slopes that will allow children with either mobility imitations of other situations to play side-by-side with other kids.
There will also be a perimeter fence around the play ground and a single gate entrance. Construction is slated to begin late this summer or early fall and there are plans for other inclusive parks across the city in the future.
