62 Pounds Of Meth Found During Seward County Traffic Stop

By Tom Stanton Jun 4, 2024 | 3:56 PM

An Illinois woman ended up in the Seward County Jail on Monday afternoon following a traffic stop.  The sheriff’s office says around 1:00 pm a deputy with the Interdiction Task Force stopped a 2023 Jeep Laredo for a traffic violation on eastbound I80.

The vehicle was driven by 50-year-old Maria Diaz and there was a five year old child inside.  During the traffic stop, the deputy became increasingly suspicious of criminal activity. The sheriff’s office says Diaz gave the deputy consent to search the SUV.  The deputy found 62 pounds of methamphetamine that was concealed in the rear of the vehicle.

The approximate street value is over $2.2 million. Diaz was taken into custody without incident and was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and intentional child abuse.

Diaz was taken to the Seward County Detention Center pending further court action. The child was turned over to the Department of Health and Human Services.
