Lincoln Police will be making sure drivers and passengers are buckled up during the Make it Click seatbelt enforcement project. From May 20 through June 2 additional officers will patrol Lincoln with a focus on traffic safety, employing a zero tolerance approach to drivers who are stopped and found to not be using their seatbelts.
“In 2023, Nebraska’s average seat belt use rate was only 77.3%, which is significantly below the national rate of 91.9%,” says LPD Public Information Officer Erika Thomas. “Across the country, someone is killed in a crash an average of every 47 minutes while not wearing a seatbelt.”
In 2022, 11,302 people killed in crashes were not wearing their seatbelts. LPD urges drivers to make sure that they and their passengers are buckled up. The enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
