Lincoln Police have released the name of a 16-year-old Lincoln East student who died after being stabbed during a fight late Saturday night. Assistant Chief Jason Stille says Xavian Sawyer got into a fight with a 14-year-old at a home near 64th and Adams around 11:45 p.m.
During the fight, Sawyer was stabbed once in the chest and stomach. He was taken to a hospital where he later died. The 14-year-old Culler Middle School student was arrested for first degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony. The Lancaster County Attorney will decide if he will be charged as an adult.
Stille says this may be the youngest murder suspect they can remember. Police recovered several knives at the scene, but it’s not yet known if one of them is the murder weapon. LPD believes the two boys had a prior disagreement that boiled over at a gathering at the home. Stille said the investigation indicates the victim wasn’t armed.
Police said several knives were recovered from the scene but it’s unclear if any of them are the murder weapon. “No other suspects are being sought at this time for the stabbing, however we are aware of multiple witnesses were in the area at the time of the stabbing and we are asking them to come forward.
They can call LPD’s non-emergency number at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600 if they wish to remain anonymous.
