Fake $20 Bills Found At Lincoln Garage Sale

By Tom Stanton May 13, 2024 | 1:16 PM

Lincoln Police say an alert resident spotted a bogus $20 bill while hosting a garage sale near 51st and J Street on Friday. Captain Todd Kocian says and man and woman arrived at the sale just before noon.

“She said the male initially purchased $5 worth of goods and paid using a fake $20 bill and she did not realize it at the time,” Kocian says.  The woman then tried to buy something and handed her a $20 bill.

“The victim said it didn’t feel right and she noticed the words ‘In Props We Trust’ on the bill,” Kocian says.  After the garage sale host told the woman she could not accept the bill, she took back both bills.

The pair was last seen driving away northbound from the area in a black Chevy pickup.   Police say this was one of two cases of counterfeit money being passed.  Last Thursday night around 9:00, officers were called to the Casey’s at 40th and Adams where an employee had a fake $100 bill.

The bill had the words ‘For Motion Picture Copy Money’ printed on it, Kocian says.  The employee says the phony bill had been used the previous night.  After reviewing security video, they saw a man using the bogus $100 bill after making a purchase.

This investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Lincoln Police Department at 402.441.6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402.475.3600.
