A 68-year-old Lincoln woman is out thousands of dollars after falling victim to an online scam. LPD Captain Todd Kocian says it began when the woman received an e-mail from PayPal saying she owed money.
“She contacted the phone number provided and was transferred to the ‘fraud department.’ During the conversation she was told her bank account had been
compromised and given instructions on how to best protect her money,” Kocian says.
The woman was told to withdraw multiple sums of money and deposit into Bitcoin machines. She ended up being scammed out of $8,914.
