Seward County Deputy Indicted After Shooting Death Of Motorist

By Tom Stanton Apr 26, 2024 | 12:10 PM

A Seward County Sheriff’s deputy has been indicted on manslaughter charges following the death of a man involved in a high speed chase on I-80 chase last October.    43-year-old Jorge Luis-Ramirez of Hastings was shot to death following the pursuit that ended in Lancaster County.

The Seward County Sheriff’s Department says deputies tried to stop a vehicle on westbound I-80 just after 3:00 on October 23.  They say the vehicle turned around and began traveling east in the westbound lanes.  A short time later the vehicle crossed back into the eastbound lanes and headed toward Lincoln.

The sheriff’s department says a high speed pursuit ensued before ending in western Lancaster County.   After the vehicle stopped, the driver and  passenger were ordered to get out of the vehicle.  The sheriff’s department says the passenger got out, but the driver refused.

They say when deputies tried to talk him, they saw a weapon in his hand.  Luis-Ramirez was then shot and killed by deputy Anthony Gann. A grand jury was convened and found probable cause that a crime had been committed and returned the manslaughter indictment.

Condon says Gann turned himself in and he was booked into the Lancaster County Jail.  His bond was set at $100,000. “Our office anticipates that Mr. Gann will have his first appearance in the District Court of Lancaster County on Monday, April 29th,” Condon says.
