Nebraska’s national holiday will be celebrated this Sunday, April 28, in Antelope Park with the second-annual ‘Arbor Day LNK’ community event, hosted by The Arbor Day Foundation (ADF).
From 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., attendees can enjoy food trucks, family-friendly activities, and live music from The Wildwoods. ADF will also give away 150 various trees on a first-come, first-serve basis for pick-up on-site at the event.
ADF President Katie Loos said they’ve been celebrating their namesake holiday all week. Arbor Day observed nationally on the last Friday in April (the 26th), but ADF festivities will fully bloom on Sunday.
“There’s no better way to celebrate Arbor Day than to just get outside,” Loos told KLIN News. “We do work all over the world, but there’s nothing better for our team than to be able to celebrate the holiday here at home with our community here in Lincoln.”
ADF has been spreading the good seeds of tree planting for over 50 years. The holiday has its American roots in the state of Nebraska, originated by J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska City, at an annual meeting of the Nebraska State board of agriculture held in Lincoln in April of 1872. An estimated one million trees were planted in Nebraska on April 10 of that year.
“More than a century and a half later, this holiday has become really a rallying point for collective action for trees across the United States,” said Loos. “It’s celebrated in all 50 states and the holiday itself really celebrates the positive impact that trees have on our lives, which is very many.”
If you cant make it to the LNK celebration on Sunday, you can use #ArborDay on social media on National Arbor Day, Friday, April 26, and the ADF will plant a tree in a forest in need every time the hashtag is used.
