Ticks Out In Force Following Mild Winter

By Tom Stanton Apr 23, 2024 | 2:40 PM

A University of Nebraska Extension entomologist says tick season is off to a strong start across Nebraska.  “We did have a mild winter, which could influence the numbers,” Kait Chapman tells KLIN News.

“Maybe we’re seeing them a little bit earlier, maybe we’re going to see more ticks.”  Chapman says the important thing is to not let ticks keep you indoors.  “Go outside and enjoy and just be aware of ticks.”

She says there are some steps you can take to prevent tick bites, including clothing sprays which use permethrin and sprays like DEET, for your skin.  She also tells KLIN News it’s important to check yourself, your children and your pets anytime you come back home from spending time outside.

Chapman says make sure you check your hair, behind the knees and armpits and between your toes. For pets, check behind their ears and pads of their feet.   She says check for any bumps that are abnormal and anyone who develops a fever or rash after being exposed to a tick should go to the doctor.
