Extra Mile Walk To Help Feed Needy Kids Set For Saturday

By Tom Stanton Apr 16, 2024 | 3:46 PM

Food Bank of Lincoln and Lincoln Public Schools will team up this Saturday for the 17th annual Extra Mile Walk.  The Food Bank’s John Mabry says the money raised through this event helps raise money and awareness for their child hunger initiatives.

“The schools, the students and the staff raise money by the thousands of dollars to help feed their classmates and to get backpacks to kids, to get food through our food markets to kids and their families,” Mabry says.

The money helps them put food in backpacks for kids to take home over the weekend.    Nearly 6,000 LPS students will benefit from this event, which has provided more than six million meals in the past 16 years.

Mabry says the walk is casual and only about a mile.  “It’s more of a celebration of hope for feeding kids in our schools.”  Nick Brown is a custodian in the LPS district office and will be doing a 12-mile trek Saturday from East High to a few schools. He will pick up food donations on his way back to East.
