Thunderstorms, Large Hail, & Tornado Conditions Possible in Lincoln Overnight

By Chase Porter Apr 15, 2024 | 1:08 PM

A strong storm system will be moving into the Lincoln area this afternoon.

Meteorologist for 1011 News — a KLIN media partner — Brad Andersen shared what he’s seeing in the forecast, and says the first chance for severe weather will be late Monday afternoon/evening, possibly extending into Tuesday morning.

“We are in an enhanced risk of severe weather… which can mean the possibility of numerous severe thunderstorms, damaging hail and winds likely, and a few tornadoes,” said Andersen.

Central Nebraska will have the better tornado chance, but Andersen says Lincoln still has a 5-10% probability of having a tornado in the area Monday evening from around 9 p.m. until about 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

“I think hail is the greatest concern,” Andersen added. “We do have a 30-40% chance of large hail, two inches in diameter or greater, over much of the state, but including Lincoln… getting into the golf ball size hail, pool ball size hail this afternoon, again tonight and into the overnight hours.”

While there is the expectation for rainfall, the system will likely be moving to fast to produce any flash flooding, according to Andersen.

In closing, Andersen encourages Lincoln residents to take precautions and be prepared in the event of dangerous weather conditions.

“This is a good time to make sure your weather radios are working, weather smartphone apps, make sure the volume is up, ready to go, because if you’re sleeping and we have severe weather overnight that will alert you of any kind of incoming bad weather,” Andersen cautioned.
