The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Department has wrapped up it’s ‘U Text. U Drive. U Pay’ enforcement effort. It’s part of a nationwide effort to reduce the number of crashes caused by distracted drivers.
The sheriff’s department increased the number of deputies who patrolled in marked cruisers. They concentrated their efforts on distracted driving violations. During the campaign deputies contacted 124 vehicles and issued 66 official traffic citations.
Those citations included 41 for speeding, three for stop sign violations, one for using a handheld wireless device and two citations issued to drivers for speed racing. Overtime pay for the additional deputies working during the campaign was paid through a mini grant funded by the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
