Runza breakfast sandwiches were flying out the door and drive-thru window of the 56th and Holdrege Street restaurant Wednesday morning. Some customers began lining up two hours before the restaurant opened at 8:00 to sink their teeth into the highly anticipated sandwich, which featured scramble eggs, ham and peppers inside their famous bread.
Southbound traffic was backed up for about a mile as customers waited for their chance to sink their teeth into one. Runza Marketing Manager Becky Perrett says they collected a free will donation on each order and the money will benefit the Feed the Need campaign, which helps youth hunger organizations.
She says while there was a lot of demand for the sandwich, it won’t become a permanent menu item. “We’re not making any big announcements about menu changes,” Parrett says. “But we thought this would be a fun one-off way to bring back some of our legacy items and give our customers the opportunity to have something that maybe they have never tried before or something they remember from the past.”
Kaleb Garr was among the walk-in customers and tells KLIN News he was there to snag two of the sandwiches. “I’ve got a friend who’s really, really into the idea of a breakfast Runza and he lives up in Omaha. I’m going to save him one of my two so he is able to get it too.”
