An annual event to benefit the People’s City Mission kicked off on Wednesday.  This is the 14th year Cornhusker Bank’s’ “Day Without Shoes” campaign has been collecting shoes for homeless people in Lincoln.

Cornhusker Bank President Barry Lockard says they have collected nearly 284,000 pairs of shoes and tens of thousands of dollars in financial donations over the years.  The bank is collecting the shoes for the People’s City Mission, which will distribute the shoes to those in need.

Pastor Tom Barber is the CEO and says this year they will reach a milestone.  “This year if they raise 44,000 pairs of shoes they’ll exceed the size of Lincoln, Nebraska,”  Barber says shoes can change the lives of the homeless.   “They are a big deal.  Many of our guests don’t have cars and many of the people we serve have to walk around and so shoes are really important to them.”

There are more than 140 drop-off sites across Lincoln.  Click here to see a list of the sites.   New and gently used shoes can be dropped off until April 14.  To help raise awareness for the impact a pair of shoes can have on a homeless person’s life. bank employees went shoeless at work on Wednesday.

Pastor Barber also kicked off his shoes as he joined bank and community representatives in a 1.2 mile walk from 84th and Cornhusker to the People’s City Mission at 68th and P.
