By Chase Porter Mar 28, 2024 | 3:15 PM

Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and city officials unveiled new designs and transit technology for Lincoln’s forthcoming Multi-modal Transportation Center on Thursday, as a part of the city’s fourth ‘Grow the Great Life Week’ announcement.

The proposed center, to be located on the southside of the city-county building on 9th and “H” Street, will feature 19 covered outdoor bus bays and be the permanent home of the StarTran transit system administrative offices. Rider amenities will include indoor and outdoor waiting areas with 40 benches, electric scooters, BikeLNK bikes, indoor restrooms, and more.

The new location will improve StarTran’s operational efficiency and customer service, as well as enhances rider comfort provide room for future growth, Elliott said.

Also detailed were new technology upgrades coming to StarTran, including 48 new solar-powered touch screens at bus stops throughout Lincoln which offer the RideLNK application, and 67 video screens now available on StarTran fixed-route buses. The kiosks and on-bus screens provide information such as updates on bus arrival times, route changes, and more.

“With these innovations along with the planned multi-modal transportation center, we’re not just improving your transit experience – we’re transforming it,” said Carla Cosier, Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Assistant Director of Transit.

The City expects to select a contractor in late 2024 and anticipates construction to be complete in 2027. The new center will cost about $32.2 million. StarTran received $23.6 million in 2022 for the project from the federal RAISE grant, through the Biden-Harris Administration’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The city will host an open house on the project tonight, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the “F” Street Community Center. Residents can also fill out an online comment form and find more information on the project at lincoln.ne.gov/TransitCenter.
