Lincoln Police are investigating another case of fraud where a victim lost thousands of dollars.  Captain Todd Kocian says a 27-year-old man contacted police Saturday morning saying he received a phone call from someone pretending to be an inspector with the Federal Trade Commission.

“The caller told the victim he was wanted for money laundering and had a warrant for his arrest,” Kocian says.  “The caller also said the victim would have to cooperate in secret to prove that his money was legitimate.”

Kocian says the victim was told  after the money was verify it would be returned to him in a cashier’s check.  “The victim then made three withdrawals from his bank totaling $40,000 and was instructed to meet a ‘government informant’ in the parking lot of Hy-Vee near 50 & ‘O’ Street.”  Kocian says the victim turned the money over to a man wearing a mask and sunglasses driving a black Honda Accord.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Lincoln Police Department at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-375-3600.
