By Kaleb Henry Mar 23, 2024 | 10:26 AM

Nebraska women’s basketball needed to fight for every second in their NCAA Tournament opening round game Friday night.

The No. 6 seed Huskers (23-11) held on to top No. 11 seed Texas A&M (19-13) 61-59 in Corvallis. This is the first NCAA Tournament win for NU in a decade.

Texas A&M erased a 17-point second-half deficit to lead in the final minute, but Logan Nissley made a pair of free throws with 14.7 seconds remaining to take a one point lead. Jaz Shelly made one free throw with two seconds left before the Aggies missed a last chance attempt at the buzzer.

Nissley finished tied with Alexis Markowski for a team-high with 16 points. Nissley made four of Nebraska’s six 3s for the game.

Both teams shot 36% on the night, with the Aggies making seven triples for a slight advantage from deep. But NU drew more fouls (23-16) and was at the line more, making 19-of-22 free throws compared to Texas A&M’s 8-of-9 performance.

Nebraska takes on No. 3 seed Oregon State Sunday at 3 p.m. CDT.
