Observe “National Unclaimed Property Day” with the Nebraska State Treasurer’s Office and get some of your unclaimed cash back in your hands.

State Treasurer Tom Briese is encouraging Nebraskans to take a moment and search your name on www.NebraskaLostCash.gov to see if they have cash or other valuables waiting for you. The search is totally free.

More than 33 million people in the United States — 1 in every 6 — has some sort of unclaimed property, which could be financial accounts or items of value in which the owner has not initiated any activity for several years. When that happens the money or properties are submitted to the state to return to the rightful owners. Common examples include unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts, and uncashed checks.

“Odds are many, many Nebraskans have money out there and the staff of the Treasurer’s Office Division of Unclaimed Property will help you get what is yours. This is your money, and it should be returned to you,” Briese said. “It’s quick, it’s easy, and it is free.”

2023 the Nebraska Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division returned more than $17 million and paid out more than 22,000 claims.

To increase awareness of unclaimed property, the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) has declared February 1st as National Unclaimed Property Day. This year the Nebraska Legislature also passed a resolution naming February 1st as Unclaimed Property Day in Nebraska.
