Nebraska’s new motorcycle helmet law goes into effect on Monday. Riders and passengers at least 21 years of age will be able to ride without a helmet if they complete a motorcycle safety course and wear eye protection.
Lincoln Police say anyone violating the helmet or eye protection requirements will be fined $250 for each offense. Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner is encouraging all riders to still wear a helmet when the new year arrives. “It’s their best chance of avoiding serious injury or death from a head injury. I think it’s in their best interest to wear a helmet, but a lot of folks don’t feel that way.”
Riders under 21 are still required to wear a helmet. Under the new law, violations of the motorcycle helmet law will become secondary offenses. Riders under 21 or those who have not completed the required safety course can only be ticketed for helmet violations if they are stopped for some other traffic offense.
