From now through January 10th Lincoln will be hosting the 11th annual Recycle Holiday Lights Drive. Coordinator Angie Alesio tells KLIN News the program and it has proven to be successful. “We are able to divert thousands of pounds of waste from local landfills. Over the last ten years the City of Lincoln has recycled over 101,000 pounds of holiday lights,” Alesio says.
Copper extracted from the lights will benefit the community. She says the profits will go to Eastridge Elementary PTO, the Lincoln Firefighters Operation Warm and the Lincoln Public Schools Science Focus Program Booster Club.
Those recycling drive has resulted in a $41,000 profit in the past ten years.
The drop off sites are:
- Eastridge Elementary School parking lot, 6245 “L” St. – southwest side of the building near the playground
- Lincoln Children’s Zoo overflow parking lot, 2847 “A” St. – across “A” Street south of the zoo
- All Lincoln Fire and Rescue Stations
No boxes, brown paper sacks, plastic bags, ornaments, artificial trees or household trash are permitted. Lights attached to garland and wreaths are only accepted in the Eastridge Elementary parking lot and should be placed in boxes next to the collection bin.
