Lincoln Police say a car that was used in an officer involved shooting Sunday morning near 19th and Knox Streets has been found. Acting Police Chief Michon Morrow said Monday morning they recovered the abandoned 2006 Hyundai Azera that the suspect fled a traffic stop in near 9th and Manatt in northwest Lincoln just before 10:15 Sunday night.
Morrow provided some new details about the incident. It began around 9:40 Sunday morning when an officer conducted a traffic stop near 19th and Knox Streets. She says the driver took off and pulled into a parking lot of an apartment complex.
Morrow says the officer pulled in behind the Hyundai, but the the driver backed up and drove around the parking lot and turned into a dead end. Morrow says the driver then revered out of the dead end and hit a retaining wall and slammed into a parked vehicle.
“The officer was out of the cruiser at that point in time.,” Morrow says. “The driver then accelerates in the direction of our officer. Two rounds were fired, striking the vehicle.” She says the car then hit some larger landscaping rocks and drove off.
Morrow says the officer was not hurt and doesn’t believe the suspect was wounded. She says they have identified a suspect and the investigation is continuing. The officer who fired his service weapon is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure for an officer-involved shooting incident.
