Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln has launched a new program, this time, for current home owners.

“A lot of people known Habitat for our new construction for families in need of safe and affordable housing,” Development Director for Habitat for Humanity Deanna Walz told KLIN News, “But we realized there’s also a need to help families stay in homes they’re currently living in.”

Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln is stepping into restoration-space with their “Repairs Program,” a home critical repairs program for lower income homeowners in Lancaster County. Qualified applicants will be able to receive a zero-interest loan to pay for the cost of critical repairs for their homes.

Critical repairs could include leaky roofs, HVAC systems, water heaters, and inadequate windows. Habitat will help coordinate the loan and the repair itself. Habitat plans on using a mix of subcontractors and volunteers to complete the repairs.

“It’s tough to build new homes all the time, and there’s a lot of great existing homes in our community that are just aging. So if we can help families keep the home that they’re living in and keep that home safe, it’s all a part of our mission of making sure that everyone has a decent place to live,” said Walz.

Homeowners need to qualify for the program which means that their income would need to fall between 30-80% of the area median income. They would need to live in the home that they own and agree to partner with Habitat on the project. Not all applicants will be approved for the program.
