Man Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting Identified

By Tom Stanton Oct 31, 2023 | 4:13 PM

The Nebraska State Patrol Special Investigations Team has positively identified the man who was shot and killed by a Seward County Sheriff’s deputy last week.  The incident happened around 3:30 on October 23 on I-80 near mile marker 390 in Lancaster County.

The patrol says 43-year-old Jorge Luis Santana-Ramirez of Hastings was shot following a pursuit that began in Seward County. The sheriff’s department said deputies tried to stop a vehicle on westbound I-80.

Investigators say the vehicle turned around and began traveling east in the westbound lanes.  A short time later the vehicle crossed back into the eastbound lanes and headed toward Lincoln.  The sheriff’s department says a high speed pursuit ensued before it ended west of Lincoln.

The sheriff’s department says after the vehicle stopped the driver and  passenger were ordered to get out of the vehicle.  The passenger got out, but Santana-Ramirez refused.  When deputies tried to talk him, they saw a weapon in his hand.

Santana-Ramirez was then shot by a deputy and died at the scene.  The investigation is continuing and will be delivered to the Lancaster County Attorney in accordance with the grand jury process.
