Seward County authorities are releasing details on a deadly officer involved shooting Tuesday afternoon. The sheriff’s department says deputies tried to stop a vehicle on westbound I-80 just after 3:00.
Investigators say the vehicle turned around and began traveling east in the westbound lanes. A short time later the vehicle crossed back into the eastbound lanes and headed toward Lincoln. The sheriff’s department says a high speed pursuit ensued before ending at mile marker 390 in Lancaster County.
The sheriff’s department says after the vehicle stopped the driver and passenger were ordered to get out of the vehicle. The passenger got out, but the driver refused. When deputies tried to talk him, they saw a weapon in his hand.
The driver was then shot by an officer and died at the scene. The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the incident. Once it’s complete, the investigation will be forwarded to the Lancaster County Attorney under the grand jury process.
The patrol is still working to positively identify the driver.
