Lincoln Acting Police Chief Michon Morrow has identified the two officers who were involved in a confrontation with a 27-year-old Chicago man at the Lincoln Bus Depot near 52nd and Superior early Tuesday morning.

“Officer Kirby Urbanek is our officer who was stabbed in the neck.  The other officer involved, Officer Kate Schwenke, shot the suspect one time.” Police say Simon Kafka didn’t have a ticket and refused to get off the bus.  When Urbanek and Schwenke arrived, Kafka began fighting with them.

Morrow says Kafka lunged at Urbanek and stabbed him in the neck and tried to grab his gun.  Officer Schwenke then fired her gun once and struck Kafka.  He has since been released from the hospital and was taken to jail.   Urbanek was also released from the hospital.

Schwenke and another off-duty officer were injured Wednesday evening as they assisted a driver involved in a crash near 158th and Saltillo Road.  LPD says Schwenke and Brent Lovett were standing outside the car when another vehicle struck them and the car head on.

Lovett suffered serious head and abdominal injuries.  Schwenke suffered an ankle injury and has since been released.
