Police Investigating Hammer Wielding Attempted Car Thief

By Chase Porter Oct 2, 2023 | 2:50 PM

A Lincoln resident was almost struck with a hammer after preventing the theft of his wife’s car.

Lincoln Police responded to a residence near 11th and Butler early Friday morning, after a 35-year-old man said he had been sitting on the front porch of his residence at saw four teenage males attempting to break into his wife’s car parked on the street.

Lincoln Police Captain Todd Kocian says the man heroically walked out to the sidewalk and began telling the teens to get away from the car. He noticed the rear driver’s side window was broken. Seemingly deterred, the group of teenagers got into a vehicle and took off eastbound direction on Butler Street.

The teens, however, turned around and came back. They exited the vehicle and started yelling at the victim. One of the males was wearing a black mask and pulled out a hammer and swung, narrowly missing the victim. The group re-entered their maroon-colored vehicle and fled the scene.

Damage to the wife’s car is estimated at $300, with an investigation ongoing.
