A Lincoln business owner has announced his candidacy in the 2024 election for Nebraska’s 21st Legislative District representing northwest Lincoln and northern Lancaster County, challenging incumbent Senator Beau Ballard.
Seth Derner is a fifth-generation Nebraskan who grew up on a cow-calf ranch near Bartlett, in Wheeler county. He co-founded the successful E-learning consulting center, Vivayic Inc in 2006, headquartered in Lincoln. Derner also founded and currently serves on the leadership team of the Neighbors United Methodist Church, and is a member of the Nebraska Farm Bureau.
Seth has been married to his wife, Carrie, for 18 years. They have two sons and live in northwest Lincoln. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education and a Master of Education in Education Leadership from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
“When I look down at the legislature, what we have down there doesn’t represent who Nebraska is,” said Derner during a Tuesday afternoon interview on the Dan Parsons Show, “I want to go back and help refocus the priorities in that legislative body to represent the things Nebraskans actually care about.”
Later, Derner zeroed in on the future of elderly care in the state, “We’ve got a lot of older Nebraskans who are going to need care, and do we have the capacity, do we have the people, the talent it’s going to take to be able to provide those opportunities? Do we have means for our older Nebraskans to be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor in a way that’s dignified and with access to the care that they need?”
Some of Derner’s stated goals for the legislature:
- Promote forward-looking economic growth that results in more entrepreneurs and high-paying jobs
- Address property valuations
- Address tax systems
- Prevent government overreach
