Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputies uncovered a counterfeit money operation after three people from Michigan were stopped on I-80 Thursday afternoon. Chief Deputy Ben Houchin says a deputy smelled marijuana and a probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted.
He says says at that time, $16,800 of counterfeit $100 bills were found in the vehicle and each of the persons. Houchin says they also found a receipt from the Walgreens at 14th and Superior. A counterfeit bill was used to purchase a soda and some soap and the trio received $93 back in real cash.
Houchin says they also found several $100 prepaid credit cards in the vehicle that they believe were bought with the bogus bucks and 6.5 grams of marijuana. All three were arrested for first degree forgery.
