Thursday marks three years since LPD Investigator Mario Herrera passed away, after a 12 days battle in the hospital against a gun shot wound he sustained in the line of duty.

The 12 Days of Hope Blood Drive was created in honor of Herrera by the Lincoln Police Department and Lincoln Fire and Rescue  in collaboration with the Nebraska Community Blood Bank. The 2023 drive concludes tomorrow, Thursday.

“Mario needed over 100 units of blood in those 12 days,” says blood bank spokesperson Kari Lundeen, emphasizing the life saving power of blood donation.
