A reported level 2 gas leak forced hotel guests out on to the downtown Haymarket street Thursday evening.

Lincoln Fire & Rescue hazardous material crews were dispatched to the Hyatt Hotel, located on the corner of Canopy & “Q” Streets around 6:45 p.m.

LFR Public Information Officer MJ Lierman said a level 2 gas leak call required evacuation of the building. An investigating revealed the cause to be a swimming pool cleaning chemical, muriatic acid (a.k.a. hydrochloric acid), that had been spilled.

Crews mitigated the spill and determined the natural gas leak to be a false alarm. After which, guests were allowed back into the building.

“It’s always a big procedure, getting everybody in and out. Ties the area up for a while,” said Lierman.

No one required medical attention.
