Guns Still Off Limits On City Property Despite New Law

By Tom Stanton Sep 1, 2023 | 11:13 AM

Beginning Saturday a new state law takes effect that allows Nebraska residents 21 years of age and older to carry a concealed handgun without a permit or safety course.   Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird signed an executive order on Friday that states weapons remain prohibited in city buildings, libraries and parks.

The Lincoln Police Department is encouraging residents to understand the law and know where concealed handguns are prohibited LPD also encourages residents enroll in a firearms safety course.

Under LB77, the City of Lincoln is prohibited from regulating the ownership, possession, storage, transportation, sale, or transfer of firearms or other weapons, except as expressly provided by state law.  LB77 also renders null and void any local ordinance, permit, or regulation that violates the new law.

The mayor’s executive order mirrors resolutions recently passed by the Lincoln-Lancaster County Public Building Commission and the West Haymarket JPA that clarify their policies in response to LB77. Residents are encouraged to review the resolutions: Public Building Commission, West Haymarket JPA.
