Excessive Heat Watch to Grip Lincoln this Weekend

By Chase Porter Aug 17, 2023 | 2:17 PM

Lincoln has enjoyed its reprieve from the recent summer heat wave… but prepare for a scorching weekend ahead.

A heatwave is set to clutch the Southeast-Nebraska region over the next several days, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Katie Gross. “It is looking exceptionally hot,” Gross states. “Heat indices could be well above 100. We’re looking at 105, up to 110 at times… not a good time to be outside for extended periods of time.”

The upcoming heatwave is expected to envelop the area, with temperatures soaring on both Saturday and Sunday, even pushing through to Monday and Tuesday. The intense heat won’t relent in the coming week either, as sunny skies dominate the forecast. According to Gross, the high-pressure system dominating the region will usher in clear conditions and high humidity levels, making conditions worse.

For those planning outdoor activities, Gross emphasizes the importance of caution and hydration. “If you need to be outside, limit physical activity and stay hydrated,” she advises. The forecast offers little relief, as precipitation chances remain minimal throughout the coming week, leaving residents to contend with sweltering conditions.

As the weekend approaches, it’s crucial to remain vigilant, stay informed about the forecast, and prioritize safety. Keep hydrated, seek shade, and avoid prolonged exposure to the soaring temperatures.
