Mayor Bids Farewell To Pershing With Eye On Future Development

By Tom Stanton Aug 10, 2023 | 4:02 PM

As demolition crews continue to tear down the Pershing Auditorium, city officials gathered on Centennial Mall Thursday to turn the page on a major piece of Lincoln’s history.  “Today we are here to say our official goodbyes to this building, which has outlived it’s useful life,” says Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird.

In honoring the rich history of the Pershing site Gaylor Baird says they are excited to write the next chapter as a destination to work, live and play in the heart of downtown Lincoln. That future will include 93 units of affordable housing, additional parking, green space and updated streetscapes.

Hallie Salem with the City’s Urban Development Department says the demolition work will be completed sometime in November.  “And then the White Lotus Group we will close with them on the land sometime in November or December and they will begin construction on their building in the spring of 2024.”

She says construction of that building will take about 14-18 months
